Prof. Ma Hong
Dr. Hong Ma is currently a professor of economics in the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, and an associate editor for the Journal of Comparative Economics and China Economic Review. He graduated from Fudan University in 2002 with a B.A. (High Honors) in Economics. He received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Davis in 2009, and won a Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award there. Dr. Ma's research mainly focuses on international trade and Chinese economy. Prof. Wang Zhi obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota in 1994 with a minor in computer and information sciences. He currently is a research faculty and a Senior Policy Fellow at the Schar School of Policy and Government of George Mason University, and also is the founding director of Research Center of Global Value Chains at University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He worked as a Lead international economist at U.S. International Trade Commission and other US government agencies more than 20 years before his current appointment. He is the co-editor of the 2017 and 2019 Global Value Chain development report joint published by the World Bank, OECD and WTO, and the author, co-author of several books and many book chapters, including Global Economic Effects of the Asian Currency Devaluations (PIIE, 1998), The Implications of China-Taiwan Economic Liberalization (PIIE, 2010), and Trade in Value Added: Developing New Measures of Cross-Border Trade (CEPR and the World Bank, 2013). https://schar.gmu.edu/about/faculty-directory/zhi-wang
Prof. Tang Heiwai
Heiwai Tang is Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics, Director of the Asia Global Institute and HKU APEC Study Center, as well as the Associate Director Institute of China Economy and the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Prior to joining HKU, he was tenured Associate Professor of International Economics at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University. He is also affiliated with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas (U.S.), the Center of Economic Studies and Ifo Institute (CESIfo, Germany), the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (Germany) and the Globalization and Economic Policy Center (U.K.) as a research fellow. He has been a consultant to the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, the United Nations, and the Asian Development Bank; and held visiting positions at the IMF, Stanford, MIT, Harvard. He is currently an associate editor of the Journal of International Economics, the Journal of Comparative Economics and the China Economic Review. Since 2021, he has served on a number of public bodies, including the Currency Board Sub-Committee of the HKMA’s Exchange Fund Advisory Committee and the Minimum Wage Commission in Hong Kong. Heiwai holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from UCLA. His research interests span a wide range of theoretical and empirical topics in international trade, with a specific focus on production networks, global value chains, and China. His research has been published in leading journals in economics, including American Economic Review and Journal of International Economics. His research and opinions have been covered by BBC, Financial Times, New York Times, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, South China Morning Post, and various think tanks such as the Brookings Institution and the Peterson Institute for International Economics. https://www.hkubs.hku.hk/people/heiwai-tang/
The research project:
"Research on Global Value Chains and China's Industrial Upgrading" is a key project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China's lead Professor Wang Zhi. It has constructed two inter-regional Input-Output databases for China:
1) China's inter-provincial Input-Output database distinguishes 3 type firm ownerships (domestic-, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan-, Foreign owned), which covers 31 provinces 42 industries, and five benchmark year over 20 years (1997-2017);
(2) An inter-city Input-Output database for Greater China area, which includes 367 prefecture-level cities in mainland China and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, covers 4 base years (2002-2017) and 42 industries.
The main research task of this postdoctoral position is to improve and apply these two databases to study major theoretical and practical economic and environment issues related to China's new development strategy and industrial upgrading from the perspective of global value chains. Potential topics include:
1. The impact of the dual circulation development strategy on China's industrial upgrading (one of the keys to understanding the new development strategy is to understand the relationship between China's domestic value chain and the global value chain);
2. Green value chain and the decarbonization of Chinese industries
3. The geographical distribution of China's domestic production network and its impact on the resilience of China's global supply chains;
4. The role of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan-invested enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises in China's domestic value chain and new development strategy;
5. The development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the upgrading of China's manufacturing industry along the global value chains;
6. A comprehensive quantitative index system to measure the upgrading of Chinese industries along the global value chains.
Compensation and benefit
1. An annual salary of 300,000 RMB (before tax) for two years will be provided.
2. Qualified candidates may apply Shuimu Tsinghua Scholar Program ( https://postdoctor.tsinghua.edu.cn/thu/index.htm) simultaneously or after entering the post doctor station. Once selected, the annual salary could reach 500,000 RMB, depending on qualification.

4. Children are offered positions at Tsinghua University’s kindergarten and primary school.
5. Postdoctoral apartment at Campus.
6. If the program is successfully concluded, the selected Postdoctoral fellow and his/her spouse and children will settle in Beijing in accordance relevant regulations of the Office of the National Postdoctoral Management Committee and the School.
Qualifications
1. A PhD degree in economics, management, statistics, computer or data science and other related disciplines (or be about to obtain); in good physical and mental health. A double major in Economics and Statistics or Computer or Data Science is a plus.
2. Within three years of doctoral graduation, under the age of 35;
3. Have relatively solid basic training in economic theory and international trade theory, and be familiar with Input-Output economics and System of National Accounts;
4. Good publication records consistent with year of after Ph.D experience in related field;
5. Proficient in writing academic papers and policy reports in both Chinese and English;
6. Strong data processing and computer programming skills, with R, SAS or STATA、Matlab programming experience, and GAMS programming experience is preferred.
7. Have teamwork spirit and some project organization ability.
8. Applicants must ensure that they will engage in postdoctoral research full-time.
9. If the applicant is an in-service employee, the personnel relationship of the post-doctorate recruited by our school needs to be transferred to our school after entering the station.
